Bordr Fiscal Representation Renewal: Do You Still Need It? (2026)

By Hannes, Co-Founder & CEO

TL;DR: Bordr's NIF service costs $150 and includes 12 months of fiscal representation. Their support site states that at the end of that year the representation "will automatically be renewed at a rate of $150 USD / year" (checked 2 September 2026). You do not need a fiscal representative if you live in the EU or EEA, if you have moved to Portugal and updated your address, or if you live outside the EU/EEA and have activated electronic notifications on Portal das Finanças (Article 19(15) LGT, in force since 9 July 2022). If that is you, the renewal is optional. Cancelling takes a few weeks of paperwork, so start at least two months before your anniversary.

This guide is for people who got their NIF through Bordr and have a renewal notice, or an anniversary, coming up. It explains what the renewal is, when the law still requires a representative, and how Bordr's own cancellation process works. For the legal background in depth, see our fiscal representative guide.

What the Bordr renewal actually is

Bordr bundles the NIF application with one year of fiscal representation: a Portugal-based person or company registered with the Tax Authority as your point of contact. Their support page "How much does it cost to get a NIF?" (last updated 4 October 2023, checked 2 September 2026) states:

"The cost to request your NIF is $150 USD and includes one year (12 months) of fiscal representation. At the end of that year, your fiscal representation will automatically be renewed at a rate of $150 USD / year."

So the renewal is a service contract with Bordr, billed in US dollars, that continues until you cancel it. Their scope article describes what the representative does for that fee, mainly receiving official correspondence at a Portuguese address and forwarding it. Three points matter for your decision:

  • The renewal is not the NIF. Your NIF was issued by Finanças and is valid for life. Cancelling representation does not cancel your NIF.
  • Bordr says cancellation stops future fees. Their cancellation guide (updated 14 November 2025) says completing it will "cancel any future fiscal representation fees from Bordr". It does not promise refunds of a renewal already charged, so timing is on you.
  • A few customers report being charged anyway. Of Bordr's 2,226 Trustpilot reviews as of 2 September 2026, about 15 are rated one to three stars, and the most common theme among them is a renewal charged after a cancellation request. That is a small share of a very well reviewed service, but it is the exact scenario this guide helps you avoid: cancel early, in writing, and keep the confirmation.

Do you still need a fiscal representative?

Bordr's expiry article warns that without a representative "the Portuguese Tax Authorities may classify you as a tax resident". The actual rule is narrower, and for most Bordr customers the requirement has already fallen away. Work through the three cases.

You live in the EU or the EEA. You never needed a representative. Article 19(8) of the Lei Geral Tributária exempts residents of EU and EEA countries outright. Bordr's own FAQ says the same for EU/EEA residents. If this is you, the renewal buys a forwarding service, nothing more.

You have moved to Portugal. Once you register your Portuguese address with Finanças you are a resident, and the representative obligation applies only to non-residents. Update your address first, because the Tax Authority's records decide your status, not where you sleep. Our guide to updating your NIF address on Portal das Finanças covers the exact steps, including what to do before you hold a residence permit.

You live outside the EU/EEA. This is the case Bordr's bundle was designed for, and it is the case the law changed. Since Decreto-Lei 44/2022 of 8 July, a non-resident who subscribes to electronic notifications on Portal das Finanças is exempt from the obligation to appoint a representative (Article 19(15) LGT). The Tax Authority confirmed the practice in Ofício Circulado 90057/2022. One rule cuts the other way: under Article 19(16) LGT, if you later switch electronic notifications off, that only takes effect after a new representative is appointed, so you cannot quietly drop out of the system.

If you own property, a car or a business in Portugal, you have ongoing tax obligations regardless of who represents you. The electronic-notifications route still removes the representative requirement, but the deadlines in those notifications are real. Read them. A fine for ignoring a mandatory appointment runs from €75 to €7,500 (Article 124 RGIT), and that is precisely why we recommend the exemption over letting representation lapse silently.

Timing: why you should start two months early

Two clocks run in sequence, and both are slow.

  1. Electronic notifications take effect on the 1st of a month. A request made by day 20 takes effect on the 1st of the next month. A request on day 21 or later takes effect the month after that. Details and screenshots are in our removal guide.
  2. Bordr's cancellation needs evidence from Finanças. Their process asks you to remove the representative with the Tax Authority first, then obtain either the updated NIF document showing the representative removed or a certificate of tax residence (certidão de domicílio fiscal), and submit it in the Bordr app.

Add the two together and a cancellation started three weeks before your anniversary is likely to miss it. Start at the two-month mark, and if your anniversary is close, contact Bordr in writing before you begin so the request date is on record.

How to cancel with Bordr, step by step

This follows Bordr's published process (support.bordr.com, "How to cancel your fiscal representation with Bordr", updated 14 November 2025). Check it yourself before you act, since support pages change.

  1. Remove the representative with Finanças. Which route you take depends on your status: register your Portuguese address if you have moved, or activate electronic notifications if you live outside the EU/EEA. EU/EEA residents can simply remove the representative. Our removal guide walks through the Portal das Finanças screens.
  2. Get the proof. Download the updated NIF document from Portal das Finanças, or request a certidão de domicílio fiscal. Either shows Finanças no longer lists Bordr's representative.
  3. Submit it in the Bordr app through their cancellation request, and keep a copy of the submission and any reply.
  4. Check the anniversary date. If the renewal falls before the cancellation is processed, ask Bordr in writing whether the charge will still go through. Their article states cancellation stops future fees; get that in your own thread.

What Coepi has to do with this

Honestly, not much. If you already hold a NIF, you do not need a new one from Coepi or anyone else, and we would rather you keep the €39.99. We publish these guides because the fiscal representation question is the most common one we get, and the answer is usually "you do not need it".

If you or someone you know has not applied yet, Coepi gets you the same official NIF for a flat €39.99 including VAT, submitted the same day, with no renewal. The Coepi vs Bordr comparison sets out the differences with dated figures, and the NIF price comparison lists every service we track. If you can travel to Portugal, the DIY route at a Finanças office is free.

Frequently asked questions

Does cancelling Bordr's fiscal representation cancel my NIF? No. The NIF is issued by the Portuguese Tax Authority and is valid for life. Representation is a separate registration that can be added, replaced or removed without touching the NIF.

Can I just let the renewal lapse instead of cancelling? Bordr's terms describe automatic renewal, so lapsing is not an option they offer; you have to cancel. On the legal side, if you live outside the EU/EEA and have no electronic notifications active, removing the representative without replacing it leaves you out of compliance. Activate electronic notifications first.

I was charged the renewal after I asked to cancel. What now? Reply on the same email thread with the date of your cancellation request and the evidence you submitted, and ask for the charge to be reversed under their stated policy that cancellation stops future fees. If you paid by card and the request predates the charge, your card issuer can also dispute it. Keep it factual and keep the paperwork.

Do I need a representative to get the Portal das Finanças password? No. The password is posted to your registered fiscal address. If a representative applied for you, the letter goes to their address and they pass it on, which is one of the practical services the fee pays for. Our Portal das Finanças password guide explains how to request a new one yourself.
