How to Get a Certificate of Tax Residence (Certidão de Domicílio Fiscal)

The Certidão de Domicílio Fiscal is an official document that proves your registered fiscal address in Portugal. It is free, and the tax authority issues it instantly as a signed PDF. This guide walks you through downloading your own copy in a few minutes.

What the certificate is for

This certificate confirms the address the tax authority (Finanças) has on file for you. People most often need it as proof of address for opening a bank account, for removing a fiscal representative, and for residency or visa steps where an authority asks for confirmation of where you are fiscally registered.

How to download it, step by step

Go to the Portal das Finanças and log in. You can sign in with your NIF and password, or with your Cartão de Cidadão.
Open the Serviços menu, then go to Documentos e Certidões.
Select Pedir Certidão.
From the list of certificate types, choose Domicílio Fiscal.
Click Confirmar to generate the request.
Click Obter to download the signed PDF.

That is the whole process. The document is produced on the spot, so there is nothing to wait for and no fee to pay.

How long the certificate stays valid

The Certidão de Domicílio Fiscal has no expiry date printed on it. However, it becomes invalid the moment you change your fiscal address, because the address it shows no longer matches your record. If you move, request a fresh copy after updating your details.

Common questions

Is it really free? Yes. There is no charge for this certificate, and it is issued immediately.

Which login should I use? Either your NIF and password or your Cartão de Cidadão will work. If you rely on the password route, make sure your access details and your Notificações settings are current so you do not get locked out.

Is this the same as a certificate of no debt? No. The Domicílio Fiscal certificate only proves your registered address. If an authority or bank asks you to show you owe nothing to the tax office, that is a different document. See our guide on getting a certificate of no debt.

Do I need a fiscal representative to do this? Not for downloading the certificate itself. Removing a representative is one of the situations where this document is commonly requested, so having it ready can help with that step under Representação.
