How to Update Your NIF Address on Portal das Finanças
Once you move to Portugal, keeping your fiscal address (morada fiscal) current is not optional. It is the address the tax authority (Autoridade Tributária, or AT) uses for tax letters, IMI bills, and official Notificações, so an outdated entry can mean you miss something important. How you update it depends on one thing: whether you hold a Cartão de Cidadão. If you still need a tax number in the first place, you can get your Portuguese NIF online before you worry about address changes.
Route A: You hold a Cartão de Cidadão
This is the situation for most residents. Your fiscal address is linked to the card itself, so you do not change it through Portal das Finanças at all. Instead, you update it through one of these channels:
- ePortugal (online)
- An Espaços Cidadão counter
- A Cartão de Cidadão service desk
When you change the address on your card, the fiscal address tied to it updates accordingly. Trying to edit it inside the Finanças portal will not work for cardholders, so use the card channels above.
Route B: You do not hold a Cartão de Cidadão
This is the common case for foreigners. Here you do work through the portal:
- Log in to Portal das Finanças.
- Go to Cidadãos > Dados Cadastrais > Morada.
- Choose Entregar Pedido de Alteração.
- Enter your new address and click Submeter.
After you submit, the AT posts a confirmation code letter to your new address. This usually arrives within about 5 business days, though delivery times can vary. Once it lands, log back in and enter that code to confirm the change. The update is not final until you do this, so watch your mailbox.
Since 1 July 2025, people without a Cartão de Cidadão have two more options. You can request the change through the e-counter (e-balcão), or you can do it in person by appointment. Appointments are scheduled on the Contactos page of the portal or by phone on +351 217 206 707, available on working days from 9am to 7pm.
One important caveat about resident status
An online address change does not, on its own, upgrade you from non-resident to resident. Becoming a tax resident is a separate matter: it carries a 60-day reporting rule and may require in-person handling. If your move to Portugal also changes your residency status, do not assume that editing your address quietly takes care of it. Treat the two as distinct steps.
Related tasks while you are in there
Updating your address often comes alongside other housekeeping. If you have just become resident, you may no longer need a fiscal representative, and our guide on removing your fiscal representative walks through that. If a bank, landlord, or authority asks you to prove where you are registered for tax, see how to request a certificate of tax residence (Certidão de Domicílio Fiscal). And if you are still getting your bearings on the basics, what a NIF is and why you need one covers the ground.
Fees and contact details can change from year to year, so confirm the current appointment options and any costs on the official portal before you rely on them.
