I Have My Portuguese NIF — What Next? (2026 Checklist)
TL;DR: Getting your NIF is step one, not the finish line. As of August 2026, the five things to do next are: 1) request your Portal das Finanças password — it arrives by post to your fiscal address, never by email; 2) confirm your email and phone on the portal and switch on electronic notifications; 3) decide on fiscal representation — under Decreto-Lei 44/2022, non-EU residents can drop the fiscal representative once electronic notifications are active; 4) open a Portuguese bank account, which requires the NIF you now hold; 5) continue with your visa or residency steps (D7/D8), which depend on that bank account. Details and links to the full guides for each step are below.
1. How do I activate my Portal das Finanças access?
The Portal das Finanças is where your entire tax life in Portugal happens — addresses, notifications, tax documents, everything. To log in you need your NIF and an access password, and the password does not arrive by email. It is posted by CTT to the fiscal address registered against your NIF, officially in about 5 working days but often closer to 2 weeks, and longer for non-residents.
Two things to get right before you request it:
- Check your fiscal address first. The letter goes to whatever address is on record; an out-of-date address means a lost password. If it needs changing, see our guide on updating your NIF address on Portal das Finanças.
- Non-EU/EEA residents: the letter is posted to your fiscal representative's address in Portugal, not to you directly, so you collect it from them.
On first login, expect to replace the temporary password with your own (mandatory since January 2025). The full walkthrough is in How to Get and Reset Your Portal das Finanças Password.
2. How do I confirm my email and set up electronic notifications?
Once you can log in, confirm your email and phone number. A confirmed contact is what lets the tax authority reach you for deadline-bearing alerts, and it is typically a prerequisite for the next step. The steps — search "dados de contacto", enter your details, confirm with the codes sent by email and SMS — take a few minutes and are covered in How to Confirm Your Email on Portal das Finanças.
Then activate electronic notifications (notificações e citações eletrónicas) under A minha área → Notificações e Citações → Gerir canais. Mind the timing: an activation requested on days 1–20 of a month takes effect on the 1st of the next month; from day 21 onwards, the month after that. This channel is more than a convenience — it is the legal key to the next step.
3. Do I still need a fiscal representative?
It depends on where you live and whether you have a Portuguese tax relationship:
- EU/EEA residents never need a fiscal representative — Article 19(8) of the Lei Geral Tributária makes it always optional.
- Non-EU/EEA residents with no Portuguese tax obligations do not need one either, per the Tax Authority's own Ofício Circulado 90057/2022.
- Non-EU/EEA residents with a tax relationship (property, a vehicle, employment) normally must appoint one — unless they subscribe to electronic notifications. Since Decreto-Lei 44/2022 of 8 July added Article 19(15) LGT, that subscription exempts you from the requirement. As of August 2026, these rules are still in force.
The exemption is not automatic: you must activate the channel (step 2 above) and actually monitor it — an unread electronic notification is still legally delivered. If you got your NIF through a representative and now want to drop them, the process is an e-balcão request with a single evidence PDF (passport, proof of address, activation screenshot), covered step by step in How to Remove Your Fiscal Representative Using Electronic Notifications. For the full legal picture, read the Fiscal Representative Guide.
4. How do I open a Portuguese bank account?
With your NIF in hand, this is the natural next move — every Portuguese bank legally requires a NIF before registering an account holder. You will typically also need your passport and proof of address (many banks accept a foreign address while you are still non-resident). A NIF issued via a fiscal representative is the same official number and is treated identically by banks. Details are in Opening a Portuguese Bank Account: Why You Need a NIF First.
5. What comes next for my visa or residency plans?
If you are heading for a D7 (passive income) or D8 (digital nomad) visa, the order of operations is: NIF → Portuguese bank account → proof of funds → visa application. You have now cleared the first two gates. The D8 minimum income is around 3,680 euros per month as of 2026, but treat all money figures as moving targets — they track the Portuguese minimum wage and change yearly. Residence applications are handled by AIMA (the agency that replaced SEF). The full context is in Why You Need a NIF for the D7 and Digital Nomad (D8) Visa.
Once you are up and running, two portal documents are worth knowing about: your IRS tax assessment (the Demonstração de Liquidação, showing refund or amount due after you file), and the Certidão de Dívida e Não Dívida, a free certificate proving you owe no tax — often requested for contracts, tenders, and residency steps.
The checklist, in order
| Step | What to do | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Request your Portal das Finanças password | It arrives by post to your fiscal address (your representative's, if you are non-EU/EEA); allow up to 2 weeks or more. |
| Confirm email/phone, then activate electronic notifications | Activations after the 20th only take effect the month after next. |
| Keep your representative, or cancel via the 2022 electronic-notifications exemption | The exemption requires an active, monitored subscription (Art. 19(15)–(16) LGT); non-EU/EEA self-employed activity still requires a VAT representative. |
| Open a Portuguese bank account with your NIF and passport | Traditional banks usually want you in person; some digital banks onboard remotely. |
| Continue your D7/D8 or residency process (bank account, proof of funds, AIMA) | Income thresholds track the minimum wage and change every year — verify before applying. |
