- Documents that do not match. The name on your proof of address must match your ID. A bill in a partner's name usually needs a different document.

- A power of attorney that is not signed. Nothing can be filed until it is.
- Portuguese public holidays and August. Fewer working days at Finanças means a longer wait.
"NIF in 24 hours": what that means
Some services advertise a NIF within 24 hours or a few days. Read the small print: the clock usually starts when your application is complete and accepted, and it often covers the filing rather than the number itself. Finanças decides when the NIF is issued. Before paying for "express" speed, ask how the time is measured, and whether a yearly renewal comes with it. How to get your NIF as fast as possible
- Take your ID photo in daylight, flat on a table, with all four corners visible.
- Use a recent proof of address in your own name, such as a utility bill, bank statement or residence registration.
