How to Get a Portuguese NIF as a Non-EU Citizen (2026 Guide)
If you hold a passport from the US, UK, Canada, Brazil, Ukraine, or any other country outside the EU/EEA, you can still get a Portuguese NIF without setting foot in Portugal. The process is fully online, but it has two extra requirements that EU citizens don't face. This guide walks through exactly what changes for you.
What's different for non-EU citizens?
Two things:
- You need a fiscal representative. Portuguese law requires anyone resident outside the EU/EEA to appoint a fiscal representative, a person or entity based in Portugal who acts as your official liaison with the tax authority, in order to apply for a NIF.
- You need a power of attorney (POA). Since you won't be at a Finanças desk in person, you sign a power of attorney authorizing your representative to request the NIF on your behalf.
That's it. The rest of the process, documents, timelines, the NIF itself, is the same as for everyone else.
Step 1: Gather your two documents
You only need:
- A clear copy of your passport. The photo page, legible and uncropped.
- A proof of address from your home country, a recent utility bill, bank statement, or a valid driver's license showing your name and address outside Portugal.
No certified translations, no embassy visits. If you are asked for an apostille on other relocation paperwork, see our apostille guide for non-EU residents, but for the NIF application through a fiscal representative, the two documents above are what matters.
Step 2: Appoint a fiscal representative and sign the POA
This is where most people get stuck doing it alone: you need someone in Portugal willing to take on the role. Friends or family resident in Portugal can do it, but they become your official tax liaison. Every notification from Finanças goes to them.
A professional service removes that burden. With Coepi, the fiscal representation for your application is included, the POA is prepared for you, and you e-sign it online in seconds. No printing, no notary.
Step 3: Your application is submitted to Finanças
Once your documents are verified and the POA is signed, the application goes to the Portuguese Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira). Coepi submits every complete application the same business day. Finanças then typically issues the NIF within 7–14 business days, and you receive the official document as a PDF by email.
Do you need the fiscal representative forever?
Usually not. A 2022 law change made fiscal representation optional for most non-residents after the NIF is issued. As long as you don't have complex tax obligations in Portugal, you likely won't need one long-term. Be careful with services that quietly auto-renew fiscal representation as a recurring annual fee; it's often a charge for something you no longer need.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply while still living in my home country? Yes. That's the standard case. The whole process is remote.
Is the NIF different for non-EU citizens? No. You receive the same official 9-digit NIF, valid for life.
Do I need a visa first? No. The NIF usually comes first: you'll need it for a bank account, renting, and most visa applications (including the D7).
