It launched in 2026 and charges €49.99 for a NIF, bundled with 12 months of fiscal representation that then renews at €49.99 a year. Coepi charges €39.99 including VAT, once. Both get you the same official NIF from the Portuguese Tax Authority, fully online, so the real questions are price and the yearly renewal.

NIF Express charges €49.99, including the first 12 months of fiscal representation (checked on nif-express.com on 24 September 2026). After that year the representation renews automatically at €49.99 a year and can be cancelled in their client portal. Over three years that is about €150 if you never cancel. NIF Express describes the representation as mandatory, but since Decreto-Lei 44/2022 most non-EU residents can drop it by switching on electronic notifications on Portal das Finanças, and EU and EEA residents never needed one.

The cost over time

You may not need a representative at all
EU and EEA residents never need one (Article 19(8) LGT). Since Decreto-Lei 44/2022, non-EU residents who switch on electronic notifications on Portal das Finanças are exempt too (Article 19(15) LGT). Turnaround
NIF Express advertises 3–7 business days from receipt of your signed documents. Coepi submits your application the same day and quotes 7–14 business days, the range Finanças typically takes to issue a NIF. Neither service controls the Tax Authority's queue.
Already have a NIF from NIF Express? You do not need a new one
A NIF is issued by Finanças and is valid for life. Nobody needs to apply again. If you want to stop the yearly fee, check whether you still need a representative, remove it with Finanças, and cancel the renewal in the NIF Express client portal before your anniversary.

Is NIF Express or Coepi cheaper for a Portuguese NIF?
Coepi. It charges €39.99 including VAT, one-time. NIF Express charges €49.99, including 12 months of fiscal representation, and then €49.99 a year for the representation until you cancel (checked 24 September 2026). Getting a NIF in person at a Finanças office is free if you can travel to Portugal.
Is the fiscal representation from NIF Express mandatory?
Not for everyone. EU and EEA residents never need a fiscal representative. Non-EU residents can drop the requirement by activating electronic notifications on Portal das Finanças (Article 19(15) of the Lei Geral Tributária, added by Decreto-Lei 44/2022). The yearly renewal is a service contract with NIF Express, not a legal requirement in those cases.
Is NIF Express a government service?
No. NIF Express is a private company, like Coepi. Both apply to the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira on your behalf with a power of attorney. The NIF itself is always issued by the Tax Authority.
The Bottom Line: Pay Once, or Pay Every Year?
NIF Express is a reasonable choice if you actually need ongoing fiscal representation. If you want the same official NIF at a lower price and without a yearly renewal, Coepi does it for a flat €39.99 incl. VAT.
