The difference is price and packaging, not the end product: both services get you the same official NIF issued by the Portuguese Tax Authority. Bordr charges $150 and bundles 12 months of fiscal representation, which renews as a yearly charge after the included period. Coepi charges a flat €39.99 including VAT, covers the representation needed for the application, and has no recurring fee. Bordr has a far longer track record; Coepi is the lean, transparent-price alternative.

Bordr charges $150 (checked on their site in August 2026), which includes 12 months of fiscal representation; after that, representation is billed yearly. Since a 2022 law change made fiscal representation optional for most non-residents, that bundle, and its renewal, is something many applicants won't need long-term. VAT treatment isn't stated on their pricing page.

The cost over time
Bordr's $150 covers the NIF plus 12 months of fiscal representation, and their support site states that at the end of that year the representation is renewed automatically at $150 per year (support.bordr.com, page last updated 4 October 2023, checked 2 September 2026). Over three years that is $450 if you never cancel. Coepi charges €39.99 including VAT, once, and nothing renews.
Cancelling the renewal takes paperwork
Bordr's own cancellation guide (updated 14 November 2025) asks you to first remove the representative with the Portuguese Tax Authority, obtain an updated NIF document or a certificate of tax residence, and then submit it in their app. A small number of Bordr's Trustpilot reviews (about 15 of 2,226 are rated one to three stars as of 2 September 2026) describe a renewal being charged after a cancellation request. Start well before your anniversary and keep written confirmation.
You may not need a representative at all
EU and EEA residents never need one (Article 19(8) LGT). Since Decreto-Lei 44/2022, non-EU residents who switch on electronic notifications on Portal das Finanças are exempt too (Article 19(15) LGT). Bordr prices in USD and does not state VAT treatment on its NIF page. Coepi's €39.99 includes VAT. The official NIF you receive is the same document from Finanças either way.
When Bordr is still the better choice
If you want one company to also open your bank account, handle your visa paperwork or file your Portuguese taxes, Bordr offers all of that and Coepi does not. If a long public review history matters to you, Bordr's 2,200+ Trustpilot reviews are a real advantage over a young service like ours. Is there a cheaper alternative to Bordr for a Portuguese NIF?
Yes. Coepi charges €39.99 including VAT, one-time, for the same official NIF from the Portuguese Tax Authority. Bordr charges $150 up front and $150 per year afterwards for fiscal representation, according to its support site (checked 2 September 2026). Do I have to renew fiscal representation every year?
Only if you actually need a representative. EU and EEA residents never do. Non-EU residents can drop the requirement by activating electronic notifications on Portal das Finanças (Article 19(15) of the Lei Geral Tributária, added by Decreto-Lei 44/2022). If you have moved to Portugal and registered your Portuguese address, you no longer need one either. Bordr's renewal is a service contract with Bordr, not a legal requirement.
I already have a NIF from Bordr. Do I need to switch to Coepi?
No. Your NIF is valid for life and does not depend on the company that applied for it. If you want to stop paying the yearly renewal, remove the fiscal representative with Finanças and follow Bordr's cancellation process. Coepi is only relevant if you or someone you know still needs a NIF.
Why is Bordr more expensive than Coepi?
